Faculty Seminar (Topic: FDI Servicification and Export of Indian Steel)
Prof. Dr. Paroma Mitra, under the guidance of Prof Dr. Atmanand, has presented a research paper on the topic “FDI Servicification and Export of Indian Steel.”
The objective of this paper was to see how “servicification” impacts the export of the steel sector in India. Two econometric models were estimated to explain export intensity for firms and firms’ export status. The tools used to study were GMM, Dynamic Probit Model. The finding of the paper was that export intensity was positively related to lagged Total Factor Productivity (TFP), services intensity, assets, and R&D Intensity. Export status was also positively related to TFP, services intensity, and assets. Besides, the export status of steel firms was significantly related to the past status, implying a kind of learning by doing. Thus, services were observed as an important determinant of the exportability of steel firms in India. Given a part of such services are imported, liberalization of services trade was essential to increase the exportability of steel firms.
MDI Murshidabad congratulates Prof. Mitra and encourages faculty members to be thought leaders in their respective fields to present cutting-edge research ideas under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Atmanand.
